The European Green Deal is a set of policy initiatives by the European Commission (‘EC’) with the overarching aim of making Europe climate neutral in 2050.
On the 17th of September, the EC launched the ‘European Green Deal Call’, a €1 billion call for research and innovation projects which respond to the climate crisis and contribute to the protection of Europe’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
This Call is the final and largest call under ‘Horizon 2020’, Europe’s Framework programme for Research and Innovation. Essentially, it aims to turn green challenges into innovation opportunities.
The Commission is looking to fund projects in any of the following areas:
- Increasing climate ambition
- Clean, affordable and secure energy
- Industry for a clean and circular economy
- Energy and resource efficient buildings
- Sustainable and smart mobility
- Farm to fork
- Biodiversity and ecosystems
- Zero-pollution, toxic-free environments
- Strengthening knowledge (horizontal area)
- Empowering citizens (horizontal area)
There are several sub-calls addressing each of these 10 areas such as a call for innovative means to address extreme wildfires; a call for the development of a 100 MW electrolyser; a call for energy efficient building and renovation work; a call for green ports or airports and many more.
The European Green Deal Call will run until the 26th of January 2021.
Therefore, if you have a project which you think fulfils any of the above aims or that will contribute to making Europe the first climate neutral continent by 2050, this may be the Fund for you.
