This year marks the exciting start of Horizon Europe, the new ambitious research and innovation framework programme which will run until 2027. Under Horizon Europe, a total of €100 billion will be made available over 2021-2027. The Horizon Europe programme is also coordinated with the European Partnerships project and the European Commission’s strategic long-term vision, entitled ‘A Clean Planet for All’.
The Horizon Europe 2021-2022 Work Programme on Climate, Energy and Mobility has now been published in its draft form, indicating the different areas and call topics which will be addressed. The final version of this Work Programme will be formally announced next month. The estimated budget for the Climate, Energy and Mobility Work Programme has been set at €1.47 billion for 2021 and €1.54 billion for 2022. Under Horizon Europe, calls will be open to bids from consortia which include organisations representing at least 3 EU Member States. It has also been confirmed that United Kingdom (‘UK’) entities (including businesses, universities and research centres) will be eligible to apply for Horizon Europe, by virtue of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement which was signed post-Brexit.
In the draft Work Programme, the following 6 focus areas (or ‘destinations’) have been identified, each containing a number of different calls:
- Climate sciences and responses for the transformation towards climate neutrality;
- Cross-sectoral solutions for the climate transition;
- Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply;
- Efficient, sustainable and inclusive energy use;
- Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes; and
- Safe, Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods.
The overarching aim of this Work Programme on Climate, Energy and Mobility is to accelerate the twin green and digital transitions and associated transformation of the economy, industry and society, in order to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Cooperation in research and innovation will be essential for our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and will pave the way to a greener and more digital future. The European Research and Innovation Days will take place on the 23rd and 24th June 2021, bringing together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and citizens to debate and shape the future of R&I in Europe and beyond.
